Designers Comments:
In the design of the Rival Bowman 40, the builders and we envisage an ocean thoroughbred of classic beauty yet with luxurious interior appointments. We feel that the Scheel Keel is now an essential element of the most modern interpretation of the classic offshore sailing yachts. Thanks to an exceptionally low centre of gravity afforded by the Scheel Keel, the Rival Bowman 40 combines above average stability for ocean sailing conditions with a reasonable draft whose advantages will be appreciated in many of the far flung tropical anchorages where depth is at a minimum. The bulb keel effect of the Scheel Keel, combined with the placement of the main propulsion engine amidships and low in the hull, enabled the designers to specify very good tankage for both fuel and water. In effect, the engine and tanks make an important contribution to the stability, so that a ballast ratio of 38% is all that is required. Experienced ocean sailors will understand that this has a beneficial effect upon the motion of the yacht in a seaway.
Importantly, no racing rule has been considered in the design of this boat, nor were the lightweight construction scantlings required in racing ever contemplated. The Rival Bowman 40?s displacement/length ratio 264 at half load condition permits robust construction, including full compliance to Lloyds +100A1 classification. Simply stated, the design and engineering of the Rival Bowman 40?s are such that she will endure, even if constantly used, as intended, for offshore cruising.
The hull styling is relatively conservative above the waterline, combining a moderate overhung counter stern with a slightly convex stem profile. In comparison to many of the newer designs, the transom has been kept reasonably moderate and of traditional shape.
The now standard high performance cruising underwater profile consisting of a highly efficient moderate draft Scheel Keel with a separate rudder protected by a large skeg provides a combination of excellent speed plus predictable transverse and directional stability. The rudder is fully supported by the skeg, and the propeller tucked safely behind the keel and supported by the integral fibreglass fin rather than the more vulnerable propeller bracket found on many other designs. The 40 foot overall length enables the interior to contain two widely separated private cabins plus a good sized galley, saloon, navigation area and stowage lockers. Each private cabin has an associated heads compartment with shower.
An essentially traditional aesthetic treatment has been adhered to in the deck design, yet with some interesting new features. The deck is fully surrounded by bulwarks for on-deck security, and the bulwarks are finished off by an attractive teak toerail. The cabin sides are close enough to vertical to permit the fitting of opening ports and the after fixed ports are sufficiently large to permit a good field of vision. Interior headroom averages 1.93m. The cockpit seatbacks have been raked outboard at the proper angle to be comfortable. Careful consideration has been given to access of all the potential stowage areas and the lockers arranged for the maximum versatility. There is a deep and voluminous sail locker to starboard and two lazarette lockers aft, one as a gas bottle locker and the other designed specifically to accept the liferaft.
The tall masthead rigged sail plan combines power with simplicity. The mainsheet traveller is forward of the companionway on the coachroof.
The Rival Bowman 40 is a yacht of sufficient size to serve as a comfortable sailing home for a family or two couples, and to be safely sailed offshore with peace of mind. Her design is fully up to date representing the optimization of cruising hull form by one of the world?s better designers. Her construction and standard specification are to very high standards, including Lloyds construction survey +100A1, so the owner can be assured that his investment is secure
